This Pedernales Falls State Park family photo session was one of the locations I had been dreaming of photographing ever since I started my photography journey in Austin in 2024.

This session took place in early March and became possible thanks to a close friend and their family, who kindly trusted me to photograph them in this special place. Capturing a family surrounded by nature, soft early-spring light, and open space here felt incredibly meaningful, and it remains one of my most memorable sessions.

Located in Johnson City, Pedernales Falls State Park is about a one-hour drive from Austin. While it is not the most convenient location distance-wise, it offers something truly special for those who are looking for a unique and immersive outdoor setting.

The park is known for its dramatic limestone rocks, flowing waterfalls, and expansive river views. The landscape feels powerful yet peaceful, and it provides a beautiful backdrop for natural, storytelling-style family photos.

Because the park is quite large, there is some walking involved from the parking area to the main photography spots. For families with very young children, this may feel a bit challenging. For this reason, Pedernales Falls State Park is not ideal for mini sessions.

Instead, I highly recommend this location for one-hour or longer sessions. A longer session allows time to walk at a relaxed pace, take breaks when needed, and truly enjoy the experience without feeling rushed. It also allows space for children to settle in naturally, which leads to more authentic and emotional photographs.
