Family Session at McKinney Falls State Park — Beautiful Fall Light and a Perfect Golden Hour

Updated: 1 day ago

Family of four walking together at McKinney Falls State Park in Austin during golden hour, with warm sunset light shining through the trees as the father carries his son on his shoulders.

I recently photographed a sweet McKinney Falls State Park family session, and it quickly became one of my favorite sessions of the season. We met in the late afternoon, just in time for golden hour, and the light was absolutely stunning. The warm glow felt softer than the summer sun, creating that gentle golden atmosphere that only fall in Austin can offer.

The park was peaceful, and the soft evening light wrapped around the family beautifully. Their two little boys were full of smiles, curiosity, and playful energy from the very beginning. Even though it was our first time meeting, they warmed up immediately, and the entire session felt fun, relaxed, and natural.

Fall in Austin has such lovely lighting. The sun sits a little lower, and everything feels softer and calmer compared to the summer months. Because of this, I highly recommend late-fall and winter sessions for anyone wanting warm, glowing family photos without the summer heat.

This McKinney Falls State Park family session reminded me again how magical golden hour can be here. The textured rock formations, open space, and the way the light streams through the trees all worked perfectly with the family’s warm color palette and outfits.

I’m so grateful I had the chance to capture these moments, and I can’t wait to photograph more families here this winter. If you're thinking about updating your family photos, the winter golden hour at McKinney Falls is truly perfect.
