In mid-October, I had the pleasure of photographing a family session at Zilker Botanical Garden in Austin — one of the places I had always dreamed of shooting at since moving here. The garden was even more beautiful than I imagined, with so many diverse spots that perfectly capture Austin’s natural charm and make it an ideal setting for Zilker Botanical Garden family photos.

From the serene Japanese Garden and the colorful Herb Garden that changes with the seasons, to the iconic Memorial Arch, the tranquil waterfall and reflective pond, and a spot where you can see the Austin skyline in the distance — every part of Zilker Botanical Garden offers beautiful and inspiring settings for natural family portraits in Austin.

There is a $50 photography fee, which includes admission for the photographer and one additional person.Other family members will need to pay the regular entrance fee separately at the gate.Even so, I highly recommend this location if you’re looking for something new and refreshing beyond the usual Austin photo spots. It’s especially great for families who love being surrounded by nature and want to enjoy a calm, green setting — a perfect place for an Austin family photographer to capture warm and genuine moments.

Although golden hour sessions aren’t possible due to the park’s early closing time, the morning light at Zilker Botanical Garden is absolutely stunning. If you visit right after it opens, you’ll find fewer people, and the gentle sunlight beautifully illuminates the gardens, bridges, and walking paths — creating soft, glowing tones perfect for photography.

Zilker Botanical Garden is truly one of Austin’s hidden gems, combining the city’s natural beauty with its downtown skyline views. It’s a location I would recommend to anyone looking to create timeless Zilker Botanical Garden family photos in a peaceful, scenic environment.
